Medical necessity is established when the patient's condition is such that use of any other method of transportation is contraindicated. In any case in which some means of transportation other than an ambulance could be used without endangering the individual's health, whether or not such other transportation is actually available, no payment
may be made for ambulance services.

Billing/Finance Staff
Gurney Van services are covered when the patient's medical and physical condition:    
A.  Requires that the patient be transported in a prone or supine position, because the patient is incapable of sitting for the period of time needed to transport.
B.  Requires specialized safety equipment over and above that normally available in passenger cars, taxicabs or other forms of public conveyance.  (continue reading)
